Quick Items While I’m on Lunch
1Watchmen comes out Friday, of course. And while this guy won’t be seeing it, I will. Well, probably not on Friday. I still have to arrange for some kind of child care type thing…but I WILL see it soon.
Anyway, I’ve read two reviews thus far, one scathing, one that can be summed up as “meh.” Rotten Tomatoes has it at 76 right now, which is fairly decent. I’m always fairly skeptical about critical acclaim/scorn when it comes to sci-fi/fantasy/comic films because, by and large, they don’t “get” the whole genre. In the “Top Critics” section it’s sitting at 17%. That’s with only six reviews, so that number will likely change come Friday. I’m not really making a point here, other than it’s something to watch.
Greg Grunberg, Parkman from Heroes, upset some people with a twitter… Just one more reason not to use it (even though I do…sometimes). If Heroes does get canceled that’ll leave The Mentalist and Phineas and Ferb as the only shows I’m even interested in anymore.
And speaking of Phineas and Ferb, tengu sent this link over…bask in the awesomeness (especially the song writing, which is one of the strongest parts of the show).

8This post was supposed to go up Wednesday…
Funny thing happened on Wednesday, though. OK, not funny really, but what happened was my new DC power jack came in the mail. See, the power jack on my laptop has been only half working for a few months so I ordered a new one. When I got home Wednesday I thought, hey I’ll just throw that bad boy in there and then my laptop is back in fighting condition. Won’t take longer than 30 minutes.
Three things prevented this from being a quick installation. First, my awesome soldering iron (read: crappy) is only 15 watts which is about powerful enough to burn your skin but not powerful enough to do much else (and I’m just going to stop exsulis right here from mentioning that he has a 3000 watt soldering bazooka…where were you on Wednesday, huh?). Second, my awesome desoldering tool (read: totally crappy) is good for…I don’t think anything, honestly. Third, the average of three hours of sleep a day for, what, six months now, means that when I’m concentrating on something small like, say, a circuit board my vision gets blurry and I start to get dizzy.
Anyway, long story a little bit longer, the power jack is now installed.
So, now what you’ve all been waiting for, pictures of Lucas Daniel Skywalker Pyle.
Yeah, that’s right, Skywalker bitch!
And now, some overly due news bits.
Did you know that AMC is remaking The Prisoner and it is gong to star Jim Caviezel and Ian McKellan?
The Watchmen movie is…what…not dead, but not really alive.
I like this quote from Malin Ackerman:
You know, sh– happens,” Ackerman told MTV. “It is what it is. As long as the film gets released and people get to see the work that we’ve done, that we’re so proud of, I think everyone will be happy.”
“I’m not so sure the studios feel the same way,” she added.
But, then just today (just a few minutes ago) I read this article about how the two studios are talking and have asked the judge presiding over the case to postpone a hearing that was scheduled for yesterday so that the two sides could continue talks this weekend. I know I’ve said before that the whole Fox stance of “never letting the film see the light of day” was all posturing. They know as well as WB that the movie is going to be a cash cizow and they were taking a hard line to further their claim to some of said moneys. I’m absolutely sure the film will be released in theatres, it’s just a matter of when.
Lastly, now that I’m officially done with school I’m hopeful that site updates will be more forthcoming. I think that, all things considered, 2008 turned out to be reasonable for NR but 2009 should be so much better.
I’m having some trouble adjusting to my new schedule…
3See, I get up at 5 am now. Well, the alarm goes off at 5 and I (eventually) drag myself out of bed around 5:30 and do a good zombie imitation as I dress. Then it’s off to “the professoring” (with a quick side trip to Starbucks) which starts at 7:30. Depending on the day, I have either 40 minutes, or 45 minutes after class ends to get to the bookmines.
The bookmines, of course, do not afford much access to the interwebz.
Most of my (ha ha) free time of late has been spent doing one of two things. OK, three things.
Because, at this point, Watchmen is what I’m really living for…
1OK, well I guess the wife, kid #1 and kid #2 (currently under development…80% boy!) are pretty good reasons to live.
But aside from that, what else have I got going? I mean, honestly, I could probably die happy after seeing Watchmen. At least, that’s what I thought yesterday after reading this article about how Dave Gibbons admits to being excited for the film (I mean, he and John Higgins even worked a bit on the pre-production for the film).
But like sands through the hour glass…
Now it seems that Fox is suing to halt production on the film altogether!
An Open Letter to Chris Nashawaty – EW.com Senior Writer
3Hey Chris,
I hope you’re doing well. That whole “writing articles” thing seems to be working out. Anyway, I just came across an article you have up on ew.com entitled Superheroes: How They Ruined Summer Movies and I just thought I’d take a moment to share with you a different…perspective.
First off, I’d like to say that I agree with you…Watchmen was one of the best books you’ve ever read.
That’s pretty much where our agreement ends.
More Watchmen Movie Madness — Madness I Say!
2Well, maybe not so mad…
Anyway watch this:
Of course, this really will have no impact on how entertaining (or not) the actual film is, how well it adapts the source material, or how satisfying an experience it is overall. But this does add a level of fan involvement rarely seen in major Hollywood films (though, probably long overdue for comic book movies). If nothing else, my opinion of Zack Snyder (the director) has grown exponentially, and hopefully many of the adverts that don’t make it into the film proper may find a place on the DVD.

3Are you anxiously awaiting next year’s biggest nerd movie?
You’re not!
What the hell?
OK, yes, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was, possibly, the second worst comic book movie of all time…I’m looking at you and your bat nipples, Clooney!
But From Hell was solid, and V for Vendetta flat out rocked! So I think we can all be at least guardedly optimistic about the next film installment from Alan Moore’s seriously deranged genius.
The costumes, while not entirely faithful, seem to be a good first step, at any rate.
