Has the Brave New World Begun Yet?

1

I came across this story thanks to Neil Gaiman’s twitter.

Brief side question: at what point do we fall over (as a society) from too many information channels?

Anyway, the basic gist of the article is

a group of Christians in Wisconsin has launched a legal claim demanding the right to publicly burn a copy of a book for teenagers which they deem to be “explicitly vulgar, racial [sic], and anti-Christian”.

I bow down to the genius that is Sacha Baron Cohen

As much as I love that review being at the top of the blog (I think it’s well written…so what if I wrote it) I had to share this…it’s just too damn awesome, and anyway, I only have a few minutes left before I go back to the mining of books.

So it appears that Sacha Baron Cohen, as Bruno, was able to lure Ron Paul into a radio studio that had been made to look like a bedroom, at which point Cohen pulled his pants down. There’s audio at the link. The most telling moment comes as Paul grudgingly admits “But, if he makes a lot of money, I have to permit the market to do this.”

That’s the best.

One Day Later

7

There are plans (GREAT PLANS!) in the works for a more visually stimulating response to yesterday’s historic day of history making historicity. We shall see if said plans come to fruition.

What I will say, at this point, is that I’m still digesting it. I mean, it’s a little weird to think that we (well, those of us who voted) were a part of a truly monumental moment in American history. More than that, though, what Obama emphasized during his speech last night was true…we’ve (the country) only taken the first few steps on a long and (probably) difficult road.

A Reflection of Society…

Over the weekend a porn was shot in the San Fernando Valley. I know, I know, big deal, right? Well this particular one, titled “Who’s Nailin’ Palin?” is, of course, just what this country needs to heal our wounded and divided society.

You can get the “heads up” (pun intended…damn I’m childish) over at TMZ, but I would like to quote the summary of the “film”:

The plot — two drunk Russians are driving their tank when it runs out of gas in front of Palin’s home. You can take it from there.

I truly do believe that at some point, in the very near future, someone will write a PhD dissertation discussing the social/cultural impact of having farce portrayed in a decidedly “mature” medium such as porn. Maybe it’s been written already. I contend that there is no lens by which we can judge ourselves more objectively than that of the “porn spoof.”

Or maybe I’m just trying to spike traffic again…

Third Post of the Day, with a Question!

3

Certainly, smarter (and in the case of John Stewart and Stephen Colbert, much funnier and more entertaining) people than me have pondered the degradation of journalistic standards in this country. I’m not going to wax philosophic about it.

But…

I came across this article and had a thought, and wanted to hear some other people’s reaction.

OK, it’s fairly short, so I’m just going to extract the whole thing.

I’m not positive…but is the Supreme Court displaying some sort of multiple personality disorder?

It’s been a while since I’ve gone off on a politically minded rant…a variety of reasons having contributed to this; disgust with the democrats nomination process, nothing to say about McCain that hasn’t been said before, generally trying not to pay a whole lot of attention for a while.

In any event, the supreme court had a couple rulings today.

I am trying not to fall asleep…and failing.

I woke up at 4 am. Well, the alarm went off at 3:30 and I got out of bed at 4:30 so I’m splitting the difference by claiming 4. This quad venti iced latte ain’t doing it yet…

So today marks the final day of the semester for me. I have an abundant amount of reading to do for my workshop since 1) A crapload of people brought in pages last week and, 2) I fell asleep during the Dodger game last night and didn’t finish. I still have five submissions to read, but I’ll space them out over the course of the day so that should be fine.
