One Day Later

7

There are plans (GREAT PLANS!) in the works for a more visually stimulating response to yesterday’s historic day of history making historicity. We shall see if said plans come to fruition.

What I will say, at this point, is that I’m still digesting it. I mean, it’s a little weird to think that we (well, those of us who voted) were a part of a truly monumental moment in American history. More than that, though, what Obama emphasized during his speech last night was true…we’ve (the country) only taken the first few steps on a long and (probably) difficult road.

Constantly, I am amazed at the sheer stupidity exhibited by the citizens of this country.

Let’s say you were driving down the street in Jonesville, South Carolina and you happened to pass the Jonesville Church of God. On the church’s sign you would read the following message:

Obama, Osama
humm
are they brothers?”

What would your reaction be?

Well, mine is that the guy who put up the sign, the pastor of the church, is a fucking asshole.

The local news has a story posted, which you can read here, but more imporantly, there is also a video clip with a brief interview with the pastor where he claims “It’s simply to cause people to realize and to see what possibly could happen if we were to get someone in there that does not believe in Jesus Christ” and when asked if he thinks Obama is a Muslim, the pastor responds “I don’t know. See it asks a question: Are they brothers? In other words, is he Muslim ? I don’t know. He says he’s not. I hope he’s not. But I don’t know. And it’s just something to try to stir people’s minds. It was never intended to hurt feelings or to offend anybody.”

OK, so the first thing to take from this is that, what, if Obama is elected, automatically the US becomes a radical Muslim state? Maybe this guy’s never heard of something called the checks and balances…and by the way, the current iteration of the Executive (a self proclaimed “born again” christian) has done a lot more to erode the basic freedoms and systematic governmental checks then any other president in history.

Secondly, this guy thinks Obama’s a straight out liar. Well, he says he’s not a Muslim, but I don’t know…a Muslim would certainly lie about something like that.

Third, he says “it was never intended to hurt feelings or to offend anybody.” OK, then either, A) this pastor’s a clueless fucking retard or, B) he’s a FUCKING LIAR. Those are the only two options here. If you didn’t know that equating Obama with Osama would offend some people, you are an idiot. And if you did, then you lied about why you did it.

According to the story, the pastor took the issue to his congregation and they “unanimously” voted to keep the sign up.

I don’t know what, exactly, that says about South Carolina in general, or that church in particular, but I’m sure I don’t like it.

I know I said this wouldn’t turn into a political type blog thing, but it’s an election year, and it seems like this one might be a particularly important one…and I know that they say that every election, but this time it’s true, really.

So the Mormon’s out which, after Tuesday, isn’t that big a surprise. All the way home yesterday (which is about a 75 minute commute) NPR was going on and on about how the conservative base still hasn’t gotten behind McCain and he needs them to win. My question is, does he?

Look, I already said that I think he’d beat Clinton in a general election. Oh, yeah I heard all the disgruntled Romneyites saying they’d vote for Hillary over McCain (and, of course, there was that Ann Coulter thing…) but that was a kneejerk reaction to their guy bowing out. As an aside, I found his “concession” speech rather graceful, except for the middle part where he felt the need to go on about how porn and gays were ruining the fabric of America….Anyway, who honestly believes that any proud, card carrying Republican is going to walk into a voting booth in November and actually pick any candidate with the name “Clinton.”

Look, I know she’s just as conservative as McCain, but it just isn’t going to happen in this world. Plus, McCain has already shown that he’s winning moderates and independents, something Hillary will have a hard time doing.

One thing that strikes me as funny is that, by and large, staunch conservatives feel betrayed by McCain because…as far as I can tell…he has some principles. He committed the cardinal sin of NOT VOTING FOR A TAX CUT WHEN IN TIME OF WAR, like, oh I don’t know, a real conservative (as opposed to a neo-con) would. Then, and this is the really crazy thing, he co-sponsored two bills with actual liberals. Dear god! We don’t want someone in the White House who actually has a history of working across the aisle!

Like I’ve said before, I’m not a McCain guy, but given the choice of him or Hillary…that’s tough.

Now Obama, there’s your (and by that I mean, my) candidate. Already we’re seeing a hint that he might be getting the better of Clinton, at least as far as money raising goes. Of course, Dems go with the whole (and decidedly more democratic) proportional delegate thing, so we’ve still got a ways to go (by the way, where would Romney be if the GOP did the same?). But I think a McCain, Obama election would be better for the country all the way around. You have a long time Washington politician who’s not really “loved” by his party vs. essentially, the most unpolitical presidential candidate you’re likely to get….
