Did You Know Last Tuesday was a Holiday?
Mar 9th
Well, it was. That was the day No Line on the Horizon, the new U2 album came out. I didn’t say anything about it last week because I wanted to let the thing marinate in my mind for a bit.
U2 is one of those bands that I think, having grown up on Bad Religion and Dead Kennedy’s, I should not enjoy. But you know what, I love that damn band. Yeah Bono’s full of himself, and yeah they are, in many ways, the stereotypical arena-rock band. But, god damnit, they write such good songs and absolutely blow away live shows. So there you are. Go buy the new album because it is, as they say, the shit.
Don’t believe me? Alright doubty mcdoubter, check this.
The Streets — Everything is Borrowed
I kinda hate myself right now.

I think there is a chance of a comic being done sometime today or this weekend. Maybe I’m being blindly optimistic…probably. Anyway, I have a few minutes right now so I thought I’d share a few things…
The Best Way to Start Off The Week? Bacon and Stalking!
Aug 5th
I’ll just say that while today is probably not the start of YOUR week, I spent most the yesterday hiding under pillows thanks to an awesome migraine that woke me up at 4 am, so today is the start of my week…
As dedicated Normalinaut Jezmon says, we here at NR have a decidely “Pro-Bacon Agenda.” Or at least I have a decidedly pro-bacon agenda, and since I’m the defacto voice of Normality Restored, by default all of NR is pro-bacon. I’ve made inquiries into starting the “Bacon-Freedom Party.” It seems rather natural, I think, to have an official snack food and, behold we now have one!
Brief Musical Stuffs
Jun 3rd
I started this yesterday on my lunch because, as gilgrim mentioned last Friday, I’ve been put on lock-down from the interwebz. Well, everyone at work here has, whatever. I really just need this job as a filler until I finish graduate school and can start teaching full time, but man would I jump ship today if I could. Until I can quit the blog posts might come with a bit less frequency…
Sunday night the wife and I saw The Cure at the Shrine. Generally, at these types of shows, there’s just one opening act that, for the most part, you try and miss. For some odd reason, the traffic was actually very good in LA that night so after parking, walking around a bit, and buying a shirt for the wife, we were in our seats by the time miscellaneous opening band was into their 2nd song. The “band,” as it turned out, is called 65daysofstatic. Now, I don’t want to say that they upstaged the headliners because when The Cure throwdown a 3-hour set with almost no breaks, they can’t be upstaged. But you expect a band like The Cure to be great. You do not, however, expect the unbilled opening act to be great.
So as I type this I’m wearing a 65daysofstatic t-shirt.
Because I have nothing of substance to say.
Apr 10th
That could be the tagline for this site, actually, since all I really do is babble semi-coherently on topics no one really cares about. And as I don’t have much anything to babble about today, here’s another heaping helping of videos, because I know all you Normalinauts love them so much…
April March
Scarlett Bliss
The Happy Bullets
Drinking on the Job
The Eames Era
When You Were a Millionaire
The Real McKenzies
Mainland
The Coral
In the Morning
The Ting Tings
Great DJ and Fruit Machine
I’m hesitant to spread this around.
Apr 8th
Because even though tickets aren’t yet on sale (or, maybe they are and I just can’t locate them on the interwebz) I imagine that since they are only playing one f’ing show in So. Cal., it is going to sell out quickly.

On this day, randomness abounds.
Mar 27th
I drove all 55 miles to work before realizing that I had left my wallet (and therefore, my driver’s license) at home. That, in and of itself, wasn’t such a big deal…I mean, as long as I don’t get pulled over on the way home. Sure, not having my ATM card with me is a bit of a bummer, but since I filled the gas tank last night and brought my lunch to work, I didn’t need money today.
Actually, I should point out that I do not need any money beyond the $3.55 in assorted change I was able to scavenge from my laptop bag in order to purchase coffee. Though the prospect of a second coffee is intriguing…
So here’s an interesting little interwebz thingamabob, the Sci-Fi Convention finder. Just type in your zip code and see any convention goodness in your general geographically related area. I guess that I should mention that I saw it on Io9 which, as far as blogs go, certainly isn’t the worst, but for some reason I find myself continuing to think that the whole Io9 site isn’t as good as it could (or should) be. Maybe it’s their insistence on pushing the new Flash Gordon, maybe it’s that (at least to me) the whole look of the page is too mainstream for a blog that’s supposed to be sci-fi based, maybe I am secretly jealous and want to blog for them. I don’t honestly know, but something about it seems forced. But maybe I’m wrong…
I am currently listening to the new Raconteurs album and I would say that right now (during my first listen) it is superior to the first. I’ve never been a huge White Stripes fan, but I really liked the last Brenden Benson album, though I can’t really explain why, and the first Raconteurs offering, while decent, always seemed a bit of an anomaly to me, like the guys in the band couldn’t figure out if they were treating it as a serious musical endeavor or as something to do for a couple of weeks. The songs on this one, however, are a lot more complex and the actual recording seems to have been given more thought. Is it the second coming of the Beatles? No. But after the first album, I could have lived the rest of my life happily without another Raconteurs offering, this one makes me want to hear a third.
My wife asked me to tell her something small I wanted for my birthday, so that my sister in law could buy me something. I responded with, “beer.” To which she responded, “you already have beer” to which I responded, “yes, but I could always have more beer…” I was finally forced to say something other then beer, which I did, but I think that small exchange, in some fundamental way, epitomizes the relationship I have with my wife in a manner that seriously warms my heart.
More to come later…

More Irishness!
Mar 17th
Well, it is just after 8:30 pm, and I still have 90 minutes until my corned beef is ready (I really need to get home earlier next March 17th).
In response to exsulis’ comment from the previous post…no, only video numero uno is Flogging Molly. Numero dos is The Pogues (I thought everyone could recognize Shane McGowen’s teeth?). Number three is the granddaddy of Irish bands, The Chieftains…and number four would be Celtic Woman.
But why stop there?!
I can do this all night…
See that? I didn’t even have to pull out The Cranberries, Sinead O’Conner, Van Morrison, Enya or U2!

In Honor of Irishness…
Mar 17th
I’m not going to say “St. Patrick’s Day” because, depending on who you ask, Patrick was either a Saint or a murderer…
Nevertheless, this is a day for all of us with some Irish in us (I’m at least 1/16th, hell yeah!) to drink until we vomit on each other, which is the best way to commemorate one’s Irish heritage…

Some Musically Related Stuffs
Mar 4th
Alan, over at the Newswire got to posting this before me, so I’m compelled to give him his due…
Basically, Nine Inch Nails purposely released to BitTorrent the first in a four part series of instrumental albums. You can download the whole four part series for a paltry 5 bucks right here, though the $300 Ultra Deluxe version (which I believe came with a naked picture of Trent Reznor, but I could be mistaken) is already sold out…
I’m not a huge fan of Radiohead, so I didn’t download their latest effort…but I AM a fan of NiN, so you can bet your sweet-ass I’m grabbing this tonight!
I like that we are seeing more artists embracing digital media and distribution and realizing that money (it’s an important piece of the equation, after all) does not necessarily have to be made in the same ways that it has been for the last 100 years. Certainly, bands like Radiohead and NiN can get away with stuff like this because of the large and loyal fanbases each band has. A new or up and coming band would be hard pressed to find success doing the same thing, and so I think we will see record labels (if they’re smart, which isn’t something we should assume…) start to be more of a vehicle to launch careers as opposed to being a vehicle to sustain careers. Larger acts will, I guarantee you, begin to take more control over the production and distribution of their content and the leverage that a record company has will only be applicable to a group who does not already have a large and dedicated audience…at least, that’s my theory…
And this is just a really good song (and interesting video) that I wanted to share…

A Post with a Variety of Random Topics as is Befitting for This, a Very Random Week
Feb 1st
First off…let me just say to Spookymuffin that I would dance around like a freak to that Feist song if that were the type of thing I did…which it totally is NOT…seriously, there is no incriminating video of my attempts to recreate that video in my backyard while wearing nothing but a snorkel mask…so don’t even try to find it…
Here’s a version of the song that is, I think, even better than the one on the album…
And to c, I’m not sure where you live, but here in Southern California, as you might imagine, the WGA strike is a pretty big deal since most of the WGA members live and work here (yeah, yeah, New York, calm down). I suppose you could live here and have totally ignored it, but I get the sense that is not the case…In any event, here’s the basics:
The writer’s are looking for two things, essentially. First, an increase in the residuals that they receive on the sell of DVD’s, and some sort of agreement on getting compensation for work produced for “new media.” Let’s take each of those points separately…
Under the current (or I should say, expired) contract whenever a DVD is sold, the writer of that DVD is given .04 dollars. That wasn’t a mistake, on a 20 dollar DVD, the writer gets 4 cents. The WGA would like this increased to the whopping amount of…wait for it…8 cents. A few points on WGA union history…That 4 cents deal was originally “sealed” in the early 80’s. At the time the studios were claiming that is was not possible to know how profitable (or, if at all…PALEASE!) the video market might be, so they convinced the WGA to take 4 cents a video. The WGA consented on the basis that they would take it as an interim deal, and after the video market had a few years to further establish itself, then the video residuals would be re-negotiated. This, of course, never happened. So the WGA took a deal, 20 years ago, they knew was a little bogus, in an effort to help stabilize the video market but never got the deal they wanted, and had been promised would come at some point. I think all sane and rational people can agree that the 4 cents to 8 cents jump is reasonable.
The “new media” thing refers, specifically to the internet. The studios are claiming that (just like with the original video deal) that there is no way to know how successful the internet will be in generating revenue for video content produced or distributed there. Several studio executives, however, have touted (on video, man are they dumb) how much money they have made/will make from internet revenue. Probably the most well known case of this crap came from The Office. A couple of years ago the show produced some 5 minute webisodes during the summer. These were written by the show’s writing staff, acted in by the actors, etc. The writer’s got paid 0 dollars for their work…that’s right, not a single penny, because the studio claimed it was some sort of promotional material, and therefore, they weren’t required to pay the writers for it. Of course, that didn’t stop NBC from force streaming a commercial to anyone who wanted to watch the webisodes in question….
Basically, the WGA is saying, money is being made on internet stuff and we deserve our share as the people WHO WROTE THE SHIT!
And the fact of the matter is we are going to see that, over the next couple of decades, more and more people are going to “consume” their entertainment online. So that, essentially, is the more important issue of the two.
Here’s something that tells it much better than me, and it’s got a great soundtrack (one point, the video states that a song writer gets paid anytime his song is performed…that is not, actually, true…any one can perform any song live, without having to pay a usage fee because congress, in a rare act of sanity, thought it sensible that if you wanted to hear a Barbara Streisand song at your wedding you didn’t need to hire HER to sing it, or pay an exorbitant fee, but could just hire the nearest cover band, but I digress…)
And here’s one on the more specific details surrounding the writers of The Office…
One last point, lest you think WGA members are all money grubbing, as the first video points out, about 1/2 of all guild members are usually unemployed (thus is the nature of the entertainment industry). One point it doesn’t make, however, is that the average salary of a WGA member is in the 35,000 dollar range (that’s including the residuals). There are some who are ridiculously wealthy, yes, but the overwhelming majority are solidly in the middle class.
As my previous post suggested, the book is done, the deadline has been met and I have a very real sense of…nothing. My wife asked how I felt and I couldn’t really respond. Not empty, per say, but not triumphant either. In reality, the book still needs some minor tweaking before it starts going off to agents and publishers all over, but for where it was going, it’s probably all right. That final 20 pages, that I’ve been meaning to get to for 2 1/2 years (hey, get off my back I’ve been in grad school) actually turned out to be 150, but what’re you gonna do? The ending certainly works better, I think, having gone in the direction it did…and I guess, as much as I hate to admit it, deep down…like, REALLY deep down…I’m an optimist…who knew?
And wouldn’t you know it, in this week where I was already sleeping about 2 or 3 hours a night, the kid runs off and develops an allergic reaction to penicillin. Currently, her face resembles a half squished melon, and this morning she could open her eyes about half way. According to the doctor, it can take up to three months for hives to disappear completely…damn does it suck to be 1 1/2! See what you have to look forward to gilgrim and april? Aren’t you so totally psyched!
Music to stay awake with…
Jan 30th
I had promised that today would be the first in a series of “regular featured” articles relating/pertaining to a specific, as yet unrevealed, topic. But guess what? I’m a big fat liar.
I’m so tired that I’m starting to say sentences without, you know, verbs and nouns. Last night I slept for nearly four hours, which is about double what I’ve gotten the last three nights. The book is done. I’ve actually written the words “The End.”
OK, I didn’t actually write those words because I don’t know how I feel about writing them since it seems pretty obvious where the end of the book is…but you get the point.
I’m about 1/5ish through revising, which is good, but I have six hours of class tonight, which is bad, and the deadline is tomorrow…so no sleepy for me!
In an attempt to keep myself awake I have been listening to the same 10 songs over and over again…here’s a few in no particular order…
The Dropkick Murphys – The Dirty Glass
…because I loves me some bands with either bagpipes or a mandolin, but both is just the definition of awesomeness…
Feist – I Feel It All
…the more I listen to this album the more I realize what a ridiculously good songwriter she is…and the more I realize I need to invest in a parka because I imagine it’s pretty easy to catch frostbite while waiting all night in someone’s trashcan when that someone lives in Canada…
The Pink Spiders – Modern Swinger
…I’m willing to take flak for this (I’m looking at you c) but we are all well aware that catchy-psuedo-punk-pop is one of my major weaknesses, and in my defense this video offers something for gilgrim (the band wears black and pink striped ties), me (chicks in pink wigs) and our hardcore sexual deviant fanbase (one word: FURRIES!)…
Muse – Map of the Problematique
…this latest album might be one of the greatest rock albums of all time from a purely musical perspective…and what I mean by that is the more you listen and understand what is there, the more you realize that they didn’t just write songs, so much as compose a series 4 minute masterpieces that are so complex and layered, it really blows my f*ing mind, plus the drummer is flat out amazing, I played the drums for a number of years and I have a soft spot for any band (probably why I liked Blink-182) with a drummer who is artistic as opposed to a guy who just sits behind the rest of the band and bangs on shit…
NOFX – The Separation of Church and Skate
…well, when did punk rock become so safe, seriously? it’s a valid question…
One last item…there is a new poll up in The Polling Place…vote and be rewarded with the pride that comes from doing some community service…
Some thoughts on music…
Jan 11th
Reading over c’s comments got me thinking about my musical tastes in general.
I’m finding that the older I get, the more diverse my taste in music becomes, which I’ve heard/read is something that usually goes the other way. Ten years ago I listened to almost nothing but punk…right now, as I type this, I’m wearing a Coldplay shirt that I got at show of their’s two years ago…if the teenaged me saw the me of today he’d definitely shake his head in disgust…
Maybe I’m less judgmental now. I’ve never been overly snobbish when it came to other entertainment. My taste in movies, for instance, isn’t really a taste at all since there is not any type of movie I don’t like. That’s not to say that some genre’s don’t produce an inordinate amount of crap. But even, say the romantic comedy, has its own examples of a well made film.
Historically, I’ve just been really picky when it comes to music. Maybe I still am, and I’ve just experienced a lot more of it now, so I realize that, yes there are gypsy bands that I enjoy. Well, with that in mind, here’s a smattering of random music in no particular order…
