Why do I suck so much?

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

It’s a rhetorical question, of course, but one I’m sure both exsulis and Jezmon (hey, by the way, nice to see you here…now where are the other two?) would have answers for in spades.

The prescribed “method” for the way things are supposed to work around here are, I post on Monday, I post on Wednesday, I post on Friday and “tada!” we put up a comic. Erratic is certainly a word one could use to describe how we’ve been doing things. Much in the same way big is a word one could use to describe the universe.

But do not despair, with help from the ever gracious exsulis, we are slowly but surely stumbling toward a real website, instead of our url slapped on top of a wordpress template (thank you, wordpress, for your free template!).

And in my defense, I did have a post written, or at least started, that was going to go up on Tuesdayish, but I didn’t really finish writing it. Plus it was on the “serious” side, which is a side I find quite perplexing and disorienting. Also, the article it referenced is something like 5 days old at this point, which in internets years is like 20,000. That shit may have already become fossilized!

So’s anyways, work continues, as it tends to do. And I thank all of you (or, maybe I should say, all 5 of you) for your patience.

One last piece of miscellaneous information. I’ve really been into the new Spoon album of late, and while checking out their site I came across an old news post that said they were playing a show on July 12 at “Cafu Nord” in San Francisco. I assume they meant Cafe Du Nord

cafe-du-nord.jpg

which is a pretty small club, literally, a ten minute walk from my old apartment in San Francisco. Don’t believe me? Well see for yourself…

Sometimes, and by that I mean, often. I fucking hate living in the god-damned suburbs! Sure, we own a house, which is certainly better for the kid, but fuck I miss being able to drink heavily in the full confidence that I can, probably, stumble the quarter-mile necessary to reach my bed. Hell, I miss being able to drink heavily, period!

The perils of parenthood can be quite perilous.

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

So, yesterday being Monday, I was supposed to put up a new post. But that, obviously, did not happen.

After three straight nights of interrupted sleep, my daughter was in no mood to go to bed. And here’s the thing about small children and sleep. When you have, say hypothecially a 14 month old daughter, the more tired said daughter is the worse she sleeps at night. Seems odd, but when a kid doesn’t get in a good nap during the day, especially after a few nights of not sleeping well to begin with, that kid turns into a screaming machine right about bedtime. Because she was so overly tired she couldn’t get relaxed enough to actually fall asleep. So the wife and I had to resort to laying down with her in our bed. When she’s really upset, it’s the only thing that really works. The upshot of this, though, was that my wife and I both fell asleep before 8 PM.

Let me point out that my wife was still in her work clothes (I, luckily, was at least in pajama bottoms, as I had gotten in the bath with my daughter in an attempt to calm her down, which did not, in fact, work), the downstairs TV was on, and our dinner was still sitting out on the stove. I woke up sometime around 11, groggily carried the kid to her crib, shoved the food in the fridge, and shut off the TV before lying back down.

Needless to say, no “blogging” was even considered.

So now that you’re all bored to tears with the minutae of my home life, here’s what I was meaning to post….

Saturday morning, during my self-inforced punishment at the bookmines (read: working my second job) I came across the following album cover…

My initial response was, “What the hell is this?!” to which a co-worker responded, “I don’t know.”

Unpreturbed by this lack of information I took said album (which just happened to be a promo) into the back to give it a listen. It took almost a full 15 seconds before I became totally obsessed with The Pipettes. I was soon informed that, besides being too cute for words, and producing a heavily addictive brand of retro-doo wop, the three girls in question are also English.

Good GOD! It’s like one of my greatest fantasies come true.

If I weren’t married and had a kid, I would totally start stalking these chicks TODAY!

But, as I can only stalk so many people at any one time, I’ll just share the Pipettes love with everyone….

The Flight of the Conchords…

Imagine Tenacious D, but from New Zealand, and more folky than say, metal.

A little something to brighten your Friday

Friday, December 21st, 2007

Because, I sure as hell need some brightening.

The previously mentioned illness has yet to leave, and now I’ve come down with the pink eye that the daughter had earlier this week. Yesterday I was actually forced into leaving work because my boss didn’t want me infecting anyone else. All in all that was fine, because a couple hours later it felt as if someone had rammed three baseballs into my ear canal. The doctor at urgent care said that it was simply the pressure from my sinus cavities moving into the back of my head.

At least now I have actual medication, and eye drops. The pressure has moved back into the front, though, so my face feels as if it is being squeezed by a madman with a vice. The wife’s office holiday party is tonight, but I’m confident that, aided by both prescription and over the counter medications, I will attend said festivities. As it is, I’m sitting in an eatery/bakery trying to work on one of my novels…

But seeing as I feel like crappycrapcrap, I needed a spiritual pick me up, if you will…

Besides being a nice song, both lyrically and musically, that is one astounding video. I didn’t realize until I watched it a second time, but that’s ONE SINGLE SHOT…I can’t imagine how many f*ing takes that must have taken…

And now on the other side of the spectrum…

That is a LOT of editing people!

Huh, kinda feel like a hippie now, with all the feel goodyness…

X-Mas the Aftermath

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

I certainly can’t say that my wintery solstice was as bad as Gilgrim’s…I still have the thing where my eye is pink, but other than that it was a decent holiday by all accounts.

We got the kid what she is calling her “car.” Which is really a Power Wheels version of an ATV. It tops out at a robust 2 mph, which is still enough to throw her head back when she hits the throttle…

My haul, if you will, consisted of mostly DVD’s, which is always welcome, though I’ve yet to watch Bender’s Big Score, but tonight may change that…

Last year began a tradition wherein I make a mixed CD for the wife. Last year, actually, had two installments. The first I titled, “Music to Love By” because my wife is sappy, and the second was christened, simply “Let’s Rock” for that is what that CD does: IT ROCKS!

This year brought just one installment, appropriately titled “Music for a Hip Mom.” See if you do not agree:

01. Muse - Starlight
02. Feist - 1, 2, 3, 4
03. Silversun Pickups - Well Thought Out Twinkles
04. Interpol - Evil
05. Hot Hot Heat - Let Me In
06. Starsailor - Poor Misguided Fool
07. Modest Mouse - Fire It Up
08. Razorlight - Hold On
09. The Mooney Sukuzki - My Dear Persephone
10. Killers - Bling (Confessions of a King)
11. The Cribs - Mirror Kissers
12. Bloc Party - Blue Light
13. Stereophonics - Dakota
14. The Kooks - She Moves in Her Own Way
15. Spoon - The Underdog
16. Keane - Crystal Ball
17. The Shins - So Says I
18. Arcade Fire - (antichrist television blues)
