One Day Later

There are plans (GREAT PLANS!) in the works for a more visually stimulating response to yesterday’s historic day of history making historicity. We shall see if said plans come to fruition.

What I will say, at this point, is that I’m still digesting it. I mean, it’s a little weird to think that we (well, those of us who voted) were a part of a truly monumental moment in American history. More than that, though, what Obama emphasized during his speech last night was true…we’ve (the country) only taken the first few steps on a long and (probably) difficult road.

Dave-O (or was it Alan?) over at the ol’ Newswire pointed out a few times before yesterday that the last great economic collapse saw a shift in American politics (i.e., voting) that lasted for several decades. I’m not sure such a long standing shift is actually possible in the digitized media, 24 hour news cycle, miracle pill culture we have today. People want solutions to problems, but they want them RIGHT NOW! Our country isn’t too hip (anymore) to letting elected officials take the long view to solve shit. Maybe back when the telegraph was still a heavily used form of communication, but now that we all have cell phones implanted in our asses, we just don’t have the patience.

Remember 1994?

That was supposed to be an election that saw a significant shift in voting toward the right that was going to last a long time. Of course, Clinton was still re-elected in 96 and then 10 years later, the Dems took back the House and Senate.

So what I’m saying is that, in regards to monumental, substantive, changes in the political leanings of the American citizenry…who the fuck knows?!

What I do know is that yesterday, a majority of voters in this country elected a man of African descent as president. That was not something I expected to see in my lifetime and I’m still (fairly) young (as a 30 year old I still fall within the “youth” demographic of 18-35 that was in overwhelming support of Obama) so who knows what might happen in the next 30 years?

Yesterday was an important, once in a lifetime, kind of day.

Will there be some good, long overdue changes in the offing over the next few years….

I certainly hope so.

  1. I voted against any incumbent at the local, state and federal levels. I figure I should try to put some new blood somewhere.

  2. I totally ignored the whole back page and a lot of the minors on the front, only to find out afterward that my godfather (who I adore) was listed in the judges. I was comforted by the fact that I don’t think he had anyone running against him, though he was the incumbent. (Only nominated to his post at the end of this summer though.)

  3. i am also still somewhat shocked that this actually came through. one thing that bothers me already is that obama campaigned against off-shore drilling and about a month or two before the election he “changed” his mind. being a member of the surf-rider foundation, taking part in any beach clean-up i can and just being very ocean minded this upset me very much, it also upset a decent amount of people with ideas like me who supported him. i still think this is probably going to be a positive change but i am a bit weary already, i truly hope these types of actions dont continue.

  4. Boo, my candidate didn’t win :( Poor Poor John Stewart.

C its politics, and politicians will be politicians IE switching to what will get them the most votes.

  5. Well, I’ll just say that yeah, Obama has a very tenuous position to hold, in that I think that many on the right are, at the moment, willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but who knows how long that will last.

He did mention energy independence as a theme in his campaign as well and while off-shore drilling won’t get us there, it may be something he needs to explore in order to appease some members of congress who have ties to the oil industry.

And, exsulis, you’re in the land of hot surfer chicks with accents so, in the end, aren’t YOU the winner!
