Today in “The Slow Demise of All Media Not Digital” Google Books

See, the thing is, when you have more money than almost anybody (or any company) you can decide to blatantly disregard existing laws and do what you want.

So, remember when Google said it would start scanning books into an online digital database that anyone could access for free? Well, even though most of what’s in there can’t be seen completely (mostly you get “previews” of books, unless a particular work is out of copyright, then the whole thing is there) the Association of American Publishers and the Author’s Guild both decided to sue Google. It was announced today that Google has reached an agreement with both parties.

In Case You Ever Wanted to Meet My Hero…

Here’s your chance!

For those of you who don’t know, James P Blaylock’s (yes THAT James P Blaylock) latest novel, Knights of the Cornerstone comes out on December 2nd. I believe I mentioned that he will be at Mysterious Galaxy on December 13th, but if you live north of San Diego then you’re in luck!

James Blaylock will be doing a reading/signing at the Borders at South Coast Plaza at 2 pm on December 6th.

It just so happens that is the bookmines where I lately toil, so I’m trying to get as many people (I’m looking at you faithful, California based, Normalinauts! Kerri gets a pass on this) to show up as possible. If you have never read anything by Blaylock I can’t recommend him highly enough. Unfortunately, because he hasn’t published a full length novel in almost a decade, a lot of his stuff is out of print. We’ll certainly have the new book on hand that day, and I have a couple of other things in the store that has his name is on.

As I said, he agreed to do a reading as well, so it should be a good time for all.

Instead of a comic….?

0

Apologies for not updating the comic yesterday as planned it should be up either Mon or Sun…. put simply, shit is wack, and shit done got out of hand. But so it goes.

But, instead of comic, how about a live appearance, and better yet how about the chance to meet creators less dubious than myself? Such awesome folk as the lovely Tommy Kovac and the infamous Steve Niles? Well, here’s your chance:

For anyone interested the Gilgrim clan will be trucking our way to Bellflower this afternoon for the 10th Anniversary Celebration of Metropolis Comics. Come on down and join us and take hold of your chance to meet the amazing Tommy Kovac, and dastardly Steve Niles in person, hang out, buy shit, get autographs and all of that fun stuff ^__^.

I have just read a 250 page novel in 5 hours. This is stated so that my state of mind, as I write this, is more fully understood by you, faithful Normalinauts. That is; she is mush.

I think the comic is pretty much self explanatory.

It is an interesting time for me, though. On days like today (that is, Mondays) I “professor” in the morning and “student” in the evening (yes, I used nouns as verbs, get off my back). No doubt other graduate students have reflected on the nature of such an arrangement before my time but I believe I have fully come to appreciate a concept that I only generally understood before.

Behold…

Your regularly scheduled comics will continue shortly.

Until then, I did want to take a moment to offer to all faithful Normalinauts a piece of literary advice.

A Reflection of Society…

Over the weekend a porn was shot in the San Fernando Valley. I know, I know, big deal, right? Well this particular one, titled “Who’s Nailin’ Palin?” is, of course, just what this country needs to heal our wounded and divided society.

You can get the “heads up” (pun intended…damn I’m childish) over at TMZ, but I would like to quote the summary of the “film”:

The plot — two drunk Russians are driving their tank when it runs out of gas in front of Palin’s home. You can take it from there.

I truly do believe that at some point, in the very near future, someone will write a PhD dissertation discussing the social/cultural impact of having farce portrayed in a decidedly “mature” medium such as porn. Maybe it’s been written already. I contend that there is no lens by which we can judge ourselves more objectively than that of the “porn spoof.”

Or maybe I’m just trying to spike traffic again…
