Another (less visual) Announcement

July 23rd, 2008

The last announcement, I think we can all agree, befitted the use of “comic” as a way of making said announcement. This one here, the one I’m about to, ahem, announce, isn’t so befitting…

Hell, maybe it is. I certainly see that the new circumstance I will soon find myself in is one ripe with the fruits that can be plundered by a comic.

Can I draw this out any longer without actually revealing what it is I’m alluding to? Probably…

I’ve hinted a couple times over the last several weeks about something that might or might not occur. Likewise I’ve complained, often and strenuously, about my current place of employ; vis a vis, how much is sucks like a lemon.

Well, last night I received a package in the mail that, once signed and sent back today, will confirm my place as an adjunct faculty member at a small liberal arts college here in Southern California.

I hesitate to mention the school by name because, honestly, if the Dean or Provost happened on this site (however unlikely) I doubt I’d make it to my first class.

What’s that? No, in fact, I am not finished with graduate school yet. I still have this final semester to get through, so in truth, I will be a graduate assistant and not a professor. That being the case, I’ve been given only two classes to teach so I’ll still need to find some other part time gig to even out the income.

The teaching thing being in Irvine, though, means that I can quit my stupid job out in the 7 level of hell known as Hemet.

Hurrah!

So, anyone know of any part time employ in the Irvine/Tustin or Corona areas?

So I’ll just leave you all with this thought. I, kilian, will be responsible for molding young minds (I’ll be teaching freshman comp). Clearly, the future of our nation is in dire trouble.

Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah! BTW, when I see Exsulis this weekend, he will be given some otherworldly texts to pass onto you in preparation for this future endeavor.

I would also like to see some comics depicting the new job. Perhaps Killian can be teaching Freshman Comp. to some exchange student Gobbo’s?

Or sending said gobbos to infest the old job?

hmmm, tengu, your ideas are intriguing.

    c, i don’t think anyone can “like” irvine…

If i have to go back to the bookmines near full time it’ll still be worth it, honestly. Last semester I took a course, coincidently, called “Teaching Composition” (I got an A, cause I’m so awesome) that was taught by a 60 year old ex-hippie and really helped me realize one of the reasons I went to graduate school.

I mean, the first reason is to be the most successful fantasy writer of all time…but failing that, just being a published fantasy writer and a professor because I actually do enjoy teaching lit and writing.

I can see a story arc now: Why the gobbos come from a land where plagiarism is the highest form of praise/have no moral qualms about it and how they attempt to bend Kilian to that way of thinking…Or how they feel only having wikipedia citations in their bibliography is perfectly acceptable.

I always knew you’d end up as either a professor, or possibly a baseball. Congratulations!

It would be so cool to have you as a teacher, Kilian. Most of the professors I know online teach things like statistics and aspects of theatre. It’s too bad there’s no school for writers, the way there’s schools for artists.

You thought I’d end up as a baseball? I’m hoping there’s a word missing there. I mean, being a baseball would be cool, but an actual major league baseball has an average lifespan of like, eight pitches.

And, thanks Kerri. I think the reason there isn’t online writing schools is due to the workshop nature of most writing programs is hard (impossible?) to emulate in an online environment.

I stand by my statement. You have to look forward, not backward. Upward, not forward.

Though eight pitches is pretty dang short. Better stick with the teaching gig.
