A Good Day for Football

Yesterday was quite a banner day for football (proper football, that is) watching. Three decent matches were on TV, Galaxy v Rapids, Germany v Poland, and US v Argentina.

The weekends being what they are, I was only able to watch portions of each game, though that still allowed me to see each of Podolski’s goals in the Germany match, and two of the three goals that the Galaxy scored, so all in all, not a bad day’s watching.

The Galaxy finally beat the Rapids this season, in a fairly good fashion considering Landon Donovan was with the US squad in New York. Germany put in a very efficient (does Germany have any other kind?) performance in their Euro 2008 opener. And the US played world #1 Argentina to a 0-0 draw in a fairly exciting match. Tim Howard has to be one of the top 15 keepers in the world and showed it last night. Now if the US could only get some similarly skilled field players…

I try not to bring up football too much because I’m aware that no one around this small corner of the interwebz is really interested. Plus, Gilgrim won the first annual Normality Restored Hooligan Futbol League, and has been gracious enough not to rub it in. I still owe him the first iteration of the NRHFL trophy…so stay tuned for that.

At least someone is enjoying their sports. Our Dodgers are sucking it up in the NL West with 3.5 games back from the Diamondbacks. Who knew the Cubs would be the best team in baseball right now? Then there’s my sad, sad Lakers who are 0-2 against the Celtics. Here’s hoping they can win at least 2 this week at home in Staples Center.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the Lakers, they were one of the best away teams in the NBA this year. I think that series will go 7 games regardless of who wins it.

As for the Dodgers, yes they may be sucking, but so are the D-backs. 3.5 games in the beginning of June really isn’t all that bad…
