No Love for Lewis

Gilgrim’s and my own opinion on certain topics…vary, of course, and we have documented these differences from time to time.

This latest occurrence of differing opinions is one that, I think, eminently displays the difference between the two opinion holders:

For instance, I love all things good and right in the world, and Gilgrim is clearly a being sent to this plane of existence from the nether regions of the multi-verse to sow pain and discord whilst drawing the highest of quality web comics.

But of course, if we didn’t have conflict, what would we have? I’ll spare you all the very long and involved religious/philosophical chat transcript from whence the above comic was born. As Gilgrim stated at its conclusion…we must continue it when we are both in the same room…and drunk.

And here’s one more treat for you (you’re so lucky!), this week’s official NR wallpaper. The perfect compliment to last weeks NR wallpaper.

Veggie Wallpaper

Assorted sizes and styles can, of course, be found in the Extras gallery.

Alright, Aleister here with my two-bits to contribute. Yes, firstly, in reverse order we do have some seriously snazzy Wallpapers(!) as the second in the weekly updated series of extra NormalityRestored digital goodies are here - so if you didn’t already from Kilian’s editorial, get on over to the Extras gallery and grab you some wallpaper for your puter.

Next up (and I seem to be avoiding discussion of the actual comic, but I’m getting there), for those that have been with us for a while, faithful and observant Normalinauts that you are, you may have noticed some aesthetic changes to the old Normality home page. This is still a work in progress and there are definitely some more kinks to work out. But we’re getting there, and as long as we have the trusty Normality Restored Coding Goblins (Local 283) on the job, and our own illustrious Exsulis to crack the whip and keep them in line, we know that the job will be done soon, and well worth the wait. For those that are new to Normality Restored (NR), welcome! For both groups, the current changes that the site is undergoing will (when they’re completed) will make it much easier to navigate, especially for viewing the actual weekly webcomics ^__^ - yay!

Thirdly, this week’s comic was completely inspired by a good old g-chat discussion between me and Kilian which really was a lot of fun, and as Kilian said from two very different sides of the ‘argument’… The funniest thing to me is that the chat/debate went on so long that we almost forgot to plot the comic, and then we realized that inspiration was staring us straight in the face in our little g-chat windows… thusly, we give you this week’s NR webcomic. I have to admit that I’m digging the more vertical lay-out for the actual comic, especially since it is so much closer to what I’m used to for making sequentials. As of now, this will likely be the format from now on, coupled with some more possible resizings (as the comics still seem a bit BIG).

Last, we’ve entered into the area of commerce here at NR. I’m not going to go into the details just yet, but I can say that some ground work has been laid. I will leave a thorough description to Kilian when he can. This probably doesn’t come as too much of a surprise to faithful Normalinauts, but NR for us is sort of a dream, a dream that we wish to participate in full time… to do that, we will be needing money, but in return we will be providing the same (if not continuously improving) high-quality content and low-brow humor you’ve come to enjoy and expect, along with extras (like the current wallpaper series) and more!

So keep a weathered eye on the NR horizon, faithful Normalinauts, change is coming. We love you,

–Aleister

Misfits - Last Caress

PS

I know many faithful Normalinauts do this any way, but in case you never noticed, there is a vote icon on the sidebar for the ‘TWC’ Rankings - we’ve come along way, and every vote you can give us helps to push us closer to the top. So if you have the time, please feel free. Vote now, vote often - get NR to the top ^__^

Well, I kinda have to side with Gilgrim on CS Lewis. Not only do I find his writings to be rather childish, reliant on the “Good Book” but also prejudice against women. I might not have been wholly against CS Lewis, IF I hadn’t as a child been forced to watch that same freaken movie 3 times a year for I don’t know 8 years running, and then FORCED to Fing read that book series twice.

This might also have to due with why I won’t see the new version of LWW, or PC.

As to the Kilian not being allowed to have a real sword, I do believe Jess’ exact words were along the lines of “Not until he is willing to learn to use it properly.”

My eyes just exploded due to the supreme kick ass-ness of this comic and i am now posting this comment on pure instinct on where everything is :p

My little brother ( who goes to a Christian school) went to see that movie today as a field trip. I dunno, i know there is all this stuffs behind it, but i just like it as like a movie in general, it makes my eyes happy.

and this week gilgrim is the lame post at the bottom dude :p But its cool that you guys be making the site all pretty like : ) yay to that.

and i think Kilian should NEVER be allowed to own anything even remotely sword like =/ think of the children people, think of the children.

I grew up on Laura Ingalls Wilder, Betsy-Tacy, and Ramona Quimby, so even the ‘normal’ parts of the Narnia books (the children at home) were bizarre for me because it was so British. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the first book and am currently bulldozing my way through an unweildly 7-in-one volume.

Sure they’re sexist and childish. They were written for children between the years 1950-1955. What kid’s book from that era wasn’t? In that same vein, the comparisons to the Bible and such are… well… thinking too hard, in my opinion. I’ll likely end up seeing the movie in DVD format since there’s no movie theatre in my city, but I still look forward to it.

Oh. Forgot to say. I agree. Kilian and sword-like objects should not be allowed to cross paths.

And do I hear NR t-shirts? Coffee mugs? Bacon???

  6. Tengu
    May 16th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

Mmmmm, NR stamped bacon…I mean shirts and mugs would be awesome. Loved the comic. I would totally allow Kilian a sword if he had followed through with wearing a kilt on his wedding. But that’s just me.

the layout of the comic worked very well i think, it does not allow my eyes to stray to any of the other panels so i am almost forced to observe the panels alone. kilians facial expression in panel four is great! there is some sexism in c.s lewis’ books but since it does somewhat follow the biblical text what else would one expect. i like his fantasy, i have some finals next week so i probably will not be able to see the movie this week but hopefully i will get some type of review from you(take that rotten tomato)!

I like how Kilian is always rip roaring drunk, agro/angry, or naked in the comics.
And really, c’mon english major, c.s. lewis was only cool in junior high, before you read anything of real quality…

  9. kilian
    May 16th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

what is it with you people thinking i can’t handle sharp bladed objects…that one time i totally slipped and that knife flew out of my hand into that other guy’s eye…seriously, that’s exactly what happened.

my contention is not that cs lewis is the be all and end all of fantasy writers, and i agree that the narnia series isn’t on par, in a literary way, with tolkien, but it was one of my first exposures to fantasy fiction in general (that and The Phantom Tollbooth) so it has a special place in my heart, and i wasn’t forced to read it so i have no lingering aftertaste of fascist/religious a-holery

as a fantasy text for children, narnia is very strong, i think. certainly not the best thing lewis wrote (from a purely “writing craft” perspective, that would be the Screwtape Letters), but i can think it stands up very well against the gluttony of children’s fantasy that’s come out in the last few years when you take into account who wrote it and when

  10. exsulis
    May 16th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

As a written work the Chronicles of Narnia isn’t a bad children story but I’ve had it. Though compared to my first forays into the fantasy(Dragonlance, The Hobbit, Beowulf) genre I found it lacking.

As to the Bible being sexest I’d put it several tiers below CS Lewis’ works. At least the “Good Book” has women in nontraditional roles for the time periods.

Well, if kilian Trained night, and Day for 5 years I might be inclined to let him play with a sword. Figuring that if he hadn’t killed himself by that point, he might not do it in the future either.

T-shirts could be something that could happen. I’m just saying .

Since you guys were posting your wallpapers and stuff (what about one for a phone?) I figured I’d get off my behind and post those icons I made. Just four, but there might be more later. Be kind. I’m not all into that screening layering masks brushes stuff.

Well, speaking as a teacher of children who these books were intended for, I don’t think there will be any problem with today’s generation comparing any movie to a book. As I sit day after day and listen to the insane babble of 12-15 year olds, I realize that books are becoming a thing of the past. What normal 21st century urban-ish kid sits down and reads a book anymore? Few to none. So, all of these books that are being compared to other books, or movies being compared to books are wasted on this generation of internet using, video game playing, lazy foul-mouthed hooligans. I beg all of you with small children to lock away the WII’s, playstations, and X-boxes and put a book in the hands of the next generation before all the Barnes and Nobles and Borders become an empty void.

The last one was hard since I have to do all the drawing and coloring and such with the mouse, but I like how it turned out. I probably made about ten more steps than necessary, but… noob.
