The Dawn Lights the Way - Episode 2

March 5th, 2008

Can be found, here….

It occurs to me that this, endeavor, I guess we’ll call it, is fairly suicidal on my part. As a writer, my most basic nature is that I should never let anyway look at my writing before it’s “ready”…partly because it’s still not complete, but mostly because I don’t want to hear criticism.

Graduate school has done a good job of killing off that instinct, I guess, because I can think of no other reason that I would be doing this otherwise.

My point is that you are all reading something that is very much a rough draft. And if my first novel is any guide, rewriting is less a hobby for me, and more a commandment. So I make no claims as to the quality of the story (either what is already written, or what will come)…of course, I make no claims as to the quality of anything else that I’ve written…

Also, I realize that this story is most definitely related to my first novel, in that it references places that exist in that novel. My second novel could certainly exist in the same universe as the other two works, but there are no direct connections. There may, or may not, be cameos, if you will, from some of the characters from novel numero uno, but time will tell on that.

Of course, none of that should matter much to anyone other than exsulis (and maybe Tengu) since they are the only other people to have read a significant amount of that first novel…

And stored on our harddrives even though you have repeatedly requested that we burn any trace of them(novel #1). I do happen to have a printed version laying around somewhere. Thank God for Duplexing or that would have been another forest I chopped down that day.

I’m already trying to figure out who the Big Bad Wolf will be in this story. I have an idea or three on where its going from the two excerpts but the story could go any number of places. True, I did notice a number of names from the first novel, and I had wondered about some of those other kingdoms but I figured some of that would be covered in the final part of the story, or left for another novel.

I believe that the part of novel one you ended at has the two “main” characters leaving the Hinterland…they do not return, nor is any of the final portion of the novel set there…the 12 Realms is an idea I had while writing that book that I wanted to explore at some point, but didn’t fit in anywhere in that one.

Yep, they had just reached the top of that one mountain, fought that one dude, and “Left” the hinderlands. Though the other kingdoms were indirectly mentioned in the second part since they weren’t mentioned as the 12 Realms, or names in most cases.

Well, the 12 Realms do not, in themselves, comprise (besides what you see in the first novel, which is really just two kingdoms and a city) the rest of the Hinterlands, they make up just one piece of it (albeit, a large and important one). There was at least one kingdom mentioned in novel 1 that was not shown (when the two main characters are “underground” the home kingdom, well the “capital” anyway, of their companions is named specifically)

‘Your awareness,’ he said. ‘That is a new quality in the Universe, which exists only because there are human beings. Physicists must from now on, when pondering the secrets of the Cosmos, factor in not only energy and matter and time, but something very new and beautiful, which is human awareness…I have thought of a better word than awareness,’ he said. ‘Let us call it soul.’ — Kurt Vonnegut, Timequake
