I’m DRUNK! Ha!

I’m DRUNK! Ha!

Actually, if you wish to get technical, I’m very middenedly-buzzed off of Trader Joe’s 2 Buck Chuck! Sadly, I would have preferred a Merlot or Pinot, but this 25 proof grape juice, Sauvignon will have to do… by the way, this is entirely April’s fault.

And on we go to the Saturday embedded video post. I’m not saying this as some sort of homage or even copying in format of Ellis’ 4AM, because I really don’t know if this stunt will repeat itself anytime soon. But while we’re all here, and I have a captive audience, I will abuse it. And by abuse, I mean subject you to at least one video.

April found this video, as it is from a band that she at one time had a single album from, and has since lost it, or misplaced it, or simply had an extremely difficult time finding it ever again. While showing me the band in question, we had a discussion about what ‘type’ of music they would be categorized as in relation to the era in which they could’ve likely hit airwaves or mainstream media. Darkwave/Newwave seems to be the best fit, and in the search April found a connection between this weird musical troupe and one of my favorite movies of the 80’s/horror genre in general, which is Manhunter(!).

The band, Shriekback, did do at least one piece on the official OST for Manhunter, but it was not the video which will be posted below. And here is where you, hopefully far less drunk, Normalinauts, come into play: the following song from the band Skriekback, was hailed as their lead single from their album Oil&Gold, and both April and I are at least somewhat convinced that we’ve heard the damned thing in a film somewhere… yet Youube seems to be of no hope or help. So do you brave Normalinauts remember this song? Do you know where you might have heard it (aside from here of course)? Let us know!

The first video was blocked out, but I gathered the song was Nemesis. From all my searching, it looks like it was never featured in a movie, but…

There was an obscure mention of it in a review of The Wicker Man, in which the reviewer says, “…the ending reminds me of the lyrics to Shriekback’s Nemesis: ‘We are not monsters, we’re moral people/ and yet we have the strength to do this.’” Here is the review, the reference is in the very last paragraph. This is the only place the song is mentioned (that I found) in relation to a movie.

But since I know you like Who, Gilgrim, I found out there’s at least two mentions of daleks by the group, once in the Oil and Gold song “Hammerheads” in which the singer (Barry Andrews) says, “This is our mission; to be the Daleks of God!” And in this link, under the Oil and Gold entry for Nemesis, it says the ‘runout groove message B’ whatever that is, on the LP from Arista (1985) was: HAND BUILT BY DALEKS, with a picture of one. Er, a dalek, not a hand.

O_O wow - I think Kerri can officially be titled our new quick-search expert here on NR. So according to Kerri’s findings (aside from the busy duties of running for presidential candidacy it would seem) is that this track has been part and parcel with some pop-culture references… and why not? After all, as Kerri pointed out, they themselves have great taste in pop-culture iconogrpahy - ala, the Dr.!

For a bit of fun, I thought I would also add the YouTube Link for the real video as featured on music teley some 20 years ago! Here you go…

Heh. *bows* Once during art class in high school I was finished, and my teacher wanted to know what had happened to a baseball team from the 1920s. I was sent to the library and spent 10 minutes looking through encyclopedias for the answer. (Because it was 1994 and comps weren’t really up to snuff.) One of my friends had said if my teacher wanted to know something, send me.

Anyway. I thought you’d like to know: the songs featured in Manhunter from Shriekback are: “Coelocanth”, “This Big Hush”, and “Evaporation”, and were featured because the director, Michael Mann, was a fan of the band. They were the only band on the soundtrack to offer three songs.
